But there is good reason for this, and it contributes to a symbolic aspect of the story. Though this may sound like a romance novel cliche, throughout this story, Toru finds himself to be powerfully drawn to two women, Naoko and Midori. It is a decision that the protagonist, Toru, must make. The main conflict, however, is an internal one. In Norwegian Wood, there are several conflicts both the protagonist and the other characters face. This can be an internal conflict, which is usually something the protagonist faces or a decision they must make, or an external conflict, which can be a struggle between the protagonist and another character or a difficult situation. A conflict is a struggle a character faces between an opposing force. In every good story, there is some sort of conflict. Question: What is a “conflict” in literature? What is the main conflict in your book? How does the ending resolve (or not resolve) the main conflict? (Is the ending happy, unhappy, or indeterminate?)
